WHAT IS THE MODERN PENTATHLON?

Modern Pentathlon was a sport created for the Olympics by its founder, Baron De Coubertain. It captures the challenge and excitement of an imaginary courier tasked with the delivery of an important message across hostile enemy territory. At an Elite level, GB has always excelled at Modern Pentathlon and won Gold in both Male and Female disciplines at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

THE PENTUP FOUNDATION’s MODERN PENTATHLON

The PentUp Foundation’s Modern Pentathlon mirrors the disciplines and format of the professional Olympics pentathlon. While the standards may not be at quite the same level as professional Olympic competitors, they are certainly challenging, requiring commitment, focus and determination in order to compete successfully.

120 metre race. Any swimming style is acceptable. There are no penalties or advantages for different styles.

Swimming

Competitors compete in teams of mixed abilities to ensure fairness. For instance, one team could include a novice and a former elite athlete. The competition is based on one-hit to win a bout.

FENCING

Riders complete a course that may have fence heights at any height from 1.0m to 30cm based on rider skill and experience. For safety reasons, riders are assessed for ‘safe jump heights’ prior to the event. They are not permitted to jump fences higher than the limit that is set. There are no disadvantages in scoring. A rider who is set a 60cm jump limit will get the same number of points as a rider who jumps a 1 metre fence.

RIDING

Three 400 metre runs, each preceded by a ‘shoot’ at a target 7 metres away. There is one class for all competitors.
