TRAINING

Each year in April, the PentUp Foundation launches a training programme for participants to equip them with the required skills for the Modern Pentathlon.

TRAINING SCHEDULE

The programme runs every two weeks on a Sunday up to a full Pentathlon competition taking place in October.

We also encourage competitors to take advantage of additional training that is offered throughout the week by our valued partners. These sessions are provided by organisations and individuals who are understanding of PTSD and supportive of sufferers.

The training schedule is as follows:

9:00 to 10:00
Optional early morning swimming at Hampton Open Air Pool. It may be outdoors, but the pool is heated to 28 degrees.

10:30 to 12:30
Fencing lessons at Hampton School.

13:00 to 14:30
Laser Run training consisting of running and shooting, also at Hampton School.

15:00 to 17:00
Horse riding training where you’ll go from sitting on a horse for the first time to becoming a confident and competent rider.

THERE ARE NO LIMITS

During the training cycle it’s a good idea to take part in relevant competitions so you can familiarise yourself with competition formats. This can help overcome anxiety associated with competitions. Some of our previous participants have gone above and beyond and taken part in events such as the Celtic Challenge, Elite Epee and The Aldershot Open.

Others have also taken part in the GB Laser Run Championships in 2017, 2018, and 2019 and have been selected to represent GB in the 2019 UIPM World Laser Run Championships.

TRAINING SUPPORT

  • One-to-one training

One-to-one training for fencing, laser shooting and riding. Provided by experienced coaches, these sessions are particularly useful for veterans who are withdrawn and wary of large groups and social contact.

  • Specialist fencing

Specialist fencing training is available during the week provided by coaches from a number of clubs, who also loan out fencing kit.

  • PTSD and horses

For those who are nervous around horses, Dare to Live, a charity that supports PTSD sufferers by interacting with horses, provides a five-day familiarisation course.

  • Swimming and running

Swimming and running training is up to each individual given that there are many free and local facilities available.

  • SWIM LAB

There also clubs such as Swimlab that provide top facilities and compelling new approaches to swimming.

  • PARK RUNS

Park Runs, for instance, happen every weekend and are a great way of getting the heart and legs pumping again without any pressure to perform.

  • LOCAL CLUBS

A number of local fencing and riding clubs also offer further weekday training.
